If Jakarta is Java’s financial and industrial powerhouse, Yogyakarta is its soul. Central to the island’s artistic and intellectual heritage, Yogyakarta (pronounced ‘Jogjakarta’ and called Jogja for short) is where the Javanese language is at its purest, Java’s arts at their brightest and its traditions at their most visible.
Jogja remains Java’s premier tourist city, an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions, including Indonesia’s most important archaeological sites, Borobudur & Prambanan.
Yogyakarta has more than just culture though. It’s a very lively city and a shopper’s delight, popular with its unique Batik shopping.
The main road, Malioboro street, is always crowded and famous for its night street food-culture and street vendors
The key attraction of Yogyakarta is ‘Kraton’ (The Sultan Palace), the center of Jogja traditional life and despite the advance of modernity, it still emanates the spirit of refinement, which has been the hallmark of Jogja’s art for centuries.
